SARIKEI: A collision involving a car and a trailer truck at the Betong/Sarikei/Meradong Road claimed two lives on Wednesday’s night (Mar 6).
Sarikei District police chief Deputy Superintendent Aswandy Anis said the incident occurred at KM451 when a 69-year-old man, driving from Kuching to Pakan, lost control, crossed into the opposing lane, and collided with a trailer truck en route from Sibu to Kuching.
“The impact resulted in the immediate death of both the car’s driver and a 96-year-old female passenger. They were pronounced dead at the scene and subsequently transported to Sarikei Hospital for autopsy,” he said.
Aswandy also said that two other passengers in the car suffered minor injuries.
Meanwhile, the driver of the trailer truck was unharmed.
The police have initiated further investigations under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act (APJ) 1987.
Meanwhile, Mahmudin Narudin, the Sarikei Fire and Rescue Department chief, said that his team received the emergency call at 11.05 pm.
“Our operations concluded at midnight, after providing initial treatment to the injured and facilitating their transfer to Sarikei Hospital for additional care,” he said.
