LIMBANG: The marine police arrested two men at Kampung Ipai here on suspicion of smuggling contraband cigarettes.
The incident happened around 8pm on Monday (Jan 18) when a patrol team spotted two suspicious-looking vehicles.
When the team approached, the vehicles sped off and a car chase ensued.
Sarawak Marine Police Region 5 commander ACP Shamsol Kassim said one of the vehicles fell into a ditch and two men aged 21 and 37 were arrested while the other managed to escape.
“Several boxes believed to contain cigarettes with unpaid duties worth RM150,000 were found in the vehicle.
“The suspects and items were handed over to Limbang police for further action under Section 135(1(d) of the Customs Act 1967.”
Meanwhile on the same night, a patrol team found the other vehicle abandoned at Kampung Ipai.
Several boxes containing contraband cigarettes worth RM150,000 were found inside.
The vehicle and items were also handed over to Limbang police for further action.
