KUCHING: Sarawak police have opened investigation papers pertaining to mischief cases involving political party flags and billboards in Kuching and Bintulu.
A police spokesman for the 15th general election (GE15), Supt Douglas Nyeging Taong in a statement, said the case is being investigated under Section 427 of the Penal Code for committing mischief and causing loss or damage to another individual’s property.
The Section carries a jail term of up to 10 years and a fine, upon conviction.
There were two investigation papers which were opened on Monday (November 14) after the police received eight police reports pertaining to election offences.
The incidents happened in Jalan Utama Kampung Bako; Tanjung Kidurong Bintulu; Kampung Melayu, Lubok Antu; Hulu Rejang and Jalan Ban Hock, Kuching where one of the contesting political parties’ flags, banners and campaign materials were vandalised.
He added that as of November 14, Sarawak police have approved 278 permits for political parties to hold their campaigns and political talks throughout the state.
Nyeging also advised all political parties contesting in the general election to abide by the laws that are set in place throughout the election period.
