Two new deaths in Sibu push toll to 67

KUCHING: Sarawak recorded another two Covid-19 deaths in Sibu on Thursday (Feb 18).

The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) said in its daily update that the deaths brought the toll now to 67.

“The 66th victim was Case 5,501, a 72-year-old local woman who was admitted to Sibu Hospital for fever, cough and pneumonia. The case was found positive on Feb 6 after undergoing rt-PCR screen test.

“The 67th victim was Case 5,883, a 66-year-old local man. The case was admitted to Sibu Hospital for pneumonia after testing positive for Covid-19 on Feb 8 through active case detection linked to the Pasai Cluster.

“Both cases also had high blood pressure and diabetes.”

To date, Sibu Hospital, and quarantine and low-risk treatment centres (PKRC) Sibu recorded the highest death at 39, followed by Sarawak General Hospital (SGH), Kuching at 19 while Bintulu Hospital and Miri Hospital recorded four deaths respectively and Kapit PKRC recorded one death.

Sibu Hospital and four Sibu PKRCs continued to receive soaring new numbers of Covid-19 patients.

Both facilities are currently filled with 1,080 patients after 120 new ones were admitted on Wednesday (Feb 17).

Of the total, 10 cases had pneumonia symptoms. They were placed under intensive care and required ventilators to breathe.

Meanwhile, SGH is currently filled with 175 patients, in which four were placed in the ICU and needed breathing support.

At Miri Hospital, two patients were in the ICU, and required breathing support. The hospital currently treats 310 Covid-19 active cases.

Bintulu Hospital currently treats 148 patients, with three patients requiring breathing support.

In other treatment centres, including Kapit PKRC, Sarikei Hospital, Limbang Hospital, Lawas PKRC and Sri Aman Hospital, there were no Covid-19 patients placed in intensive care.

Kapit PKRC currently treats 200 patients; Sarikei Hospital, 55, and Limbang Hospital, Lawas PKRC and Sri Aman PKRC, one each.

As of Thursday, 1,971 patients were still under treatment and supervision at PKRCs and hospitals statewide.
