KOTA SAMARAHAN: Two new schools, namely SK Merdang and SK Pengkalan Kuap will be built to accommodate the increase in primary school pupils here.
According to Kota Samarahan MP Rubiah Wang, the construction of SK Merdang (formerly known as SK St Martin) is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
“Meanwhile, the establishment of SK Pengkalan Kuap was approved in 2016 but is only being built this year due to several factors such as land issues,” she explained at an Aidilfitri open house at the Dewan Suarah here, yesterday.
She said the number of new pupils entering primary schools in Kota Samarahan increased as a result of the growth in residential properties in the area.
“At present, there are 700 pupils in the old SK Merdang. They are being placed in a temporary building rented by the state Education Department.
“Hence, when the two new schools are operationa, the overcrowding problem will be a thing of the past,” she pointed out.
At the event, Rubiah also expressed her gratitude to the federal government for not cancelling the construction of the two schools.
Meanwhile, more than 300 residents around here attended the Aidilfitri open house which started from 10am to 3pm.
Also present were Tanjung Datu assemblywoman Datuk Amar Jamilah Anu, Muara Tuang assemblyman Datuk Idris Buang and Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
