SIBU: Two recent cases of robbery in Sungai Bidut area sounded a security siren in the western part of Sibu.
Sibu Member of Parliament Oscar Ling Chai Yew said he received numerous complaints from local residents, especially in Sungai Bidut area pertaining to security issues.
“Hence, I have held a dialogue session with the Sibu District police last week to discuss security issues in western Sibu and what the police should do to address this problem,” he said.
Oscar pointed out that the statistics reported by the police are lower than those reported in the complaints by the locals.
“This could mean a lot of crime cases in the area are not reported to the police because the residents do not care about the importance of reporting criminal cases.
“The Sibu police and I call on residents in western Sibu, especially in the Sungai Bidut area to report any criminal case to the police to enable them to plan a more effective strategy,” he said.
He continued, “Meanwhile, the police have conducted patrols in west Sibu three times a day, and they are only effective if the residents are willing to go with the police and try to combat crime.”
Oscar added, “I have recommended installing closed circuit television (CCTV) at Sungai Bidut and the police have welcomed my proposal.”
“The police have suggested some places that are considered appropriate for CCTV installations during the dialogue sessions,” he said.
He also said, “After the dialogue session, I went to the police station and reviewed the various strategic places to install CCTV. I hope that with the installation of CCTV crime activities in west Sibu could be reduced.”
