MIRI: Two primary schools in this district were ordered closed from yesterday morning as the air pollutant index (API) recorded very unhealthy readings.

Sarawak Disaster Management Committee Secretariat said SK Kuala Baram 2 and SJK Chung Hua Tudan were ordered closed at 9am yesterday when ILP Miri recorded an API of 404 (harzardous) and 204 (very unhealthy) at SK Kuala Baram 2.

Major Ismail Mahedin from the Civil Defence Force said SJK Chung Hua Tudan which lies adjacent to ILP Miri was the worst affected.

The school has a student population of 1,906 pupils and 109 teachers. SK Kuala Baram 2 has 606 pupils with 95 teachers. Ismail said the increasing trend of the API since early morning had prompted the authorities to order the two schools be closed until further notice.
