KUCHING: University College of Technology Sarawak (UCTS) is currently negotiating with Sosa Shennong Group in Taiwan for a number of co-operation projects. The university is hoping to bring Shennong agricultural technology to Sibu and at the same time, promote the development of Sibu’s agricultural technology.
UCTS said in a statement yesterday, the negotiation was underway following several field visits to Taiwan led by former Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh, UCTS chairman and board of directors.
It added that during a meeting with Shennong Group on Tuesday night, several projects were identified for the co-operation. They include an Orchid Research Centre in UCTS; research and development collaboration with National Chiayi University (NCYU) in Taiwan; and information sharing by professors from NCYU to conduct courses on orchid cultivation technology for UCTS students and foreign students.
Besides, UCTS is planning to establish an experimental project on passion fruit planting in the university. UCTS is also planning to organise short courses on agricultural technology to locals who are interested in the agriculture industry. The teaching manpower consists of agricultural technology experts from Taiwan Shennong Association and professors from National Chiayi University, Taiwan.
