KUCHING: Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas has directed the Public Works Department (JKR) to conduct an immediate investigation on any other sinkholes within the Kuching area.
The Deputy Premier said that once the investigation is done, the report will be available sometime around this week.
He said this in a response to a recent sinkhole sighting along Jalan Tun Jugah, within the vicinity of CityOne Megamall.
“We are trying our best to find out what is happening, and we have already closed the sinkhole.
“However, solving the problem is not enough, we want to know what is the cause, we want to know what are the underlying issue here.”
He said this when met by reporters after officiating the handover of the occupation permit (OP) for the Unit for Other Religions (Unifor) to the Unifor Trust Board at the Unifor Complex here today (Oct 30).
He added that relevant parties will continue to monitor areas that may be susceptible to sinkholes.
Recently, a Facebook account called “Sarawak Roads Update” posted a photo of a sinkhole near the CityOne Megamall.
In the post, the account urged authorities to look into the matter.
“We hope you can assist in this matter. Thank you” the Facebook post said.
