KOTA SAMARAHAN: Dec 19 has been declared by Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) as UiTM Alumni Day.
This was officially done by its vice-chancellor, Prof Datuk Ts Dr Roziah Mohd Janor.
“UiTM Alumni Day is important because it is an appreciation of all UiTM alumni or graduates who have become the catalyst for the sustainability of the university ecosystem.”
She said this during the 95th UiTM convocation ceremony at Jubilee Hall, UiTM here on Monday (Dec 19).
She added that with Alumni Day in place, the relationship among graduates could be strengthened and promote collaboration.
UiTM has created over 600,000 graduates from all over Malaysia in various fields. It is a public university primarily based in Shah Alam, Selangor.
It was established in 1956 as the Rural and Industrial Development Authority (RIDA) Training Centre in Petaling Jaya, Selangor and opened with around 50 students.
Since then, it has grown into the largest institution of higher education in Malaysia in terms of physical infrastructure, faculties, staff and student enrolment.
UiTM, known as RIDA Training Centre from 1956 to 1965, changed its name to Mara College from 1965 until 1967. It was known as Mara Institute of Technology from 1967 until 1999.
On Aug 26, 1999, former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad announced yet another name change – to its current one, which is Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM).
