MUKAH: Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Mukah Campus has the potential to be a centre of excellence for various economic activities in Sarawak.
UiTM Chairman Professor Datuk Dr Raduan Che Rose said this involves research on sago, sago-related products and other areas related to halal food and so on.
“With the existence of these programmes, we can make it a platform to get the involvement of academics from all Asean countries and other countries such as Japan, Korea and Europe to come here.
“We will connect external parties with this institute to conduct research.
“This is an approach that needs to be done so that the existing infrastructure can be fully used,” he said after a Business Engagement Session and Mukah Campus Tour, here, on Monday.
Commenting further, he said, this is also a step to attract more students to continue their studies here.
“For UiTM Kampus Mukah, we plan to get a student capacity of more than 2,000 people.
“Following that, I believe, with the introduction of new programmes that we bring in but not permanently, we will be able to reach the number,” he said.
In this regard, he said the physical development of the campus need not be expanded because the existing infrastructure is sufficient.
“In fact, it is better than other places because the development here cost a huge sum of RM300 million.
“Our priority is to think about how the Mukah campus is used optimally in terms of study programmes that can attract sufficient students and teaching staff at all times.
“I believe UiTM’s Sarawak branch from Samarahan also has a strategic plan,” he added.
He therefore hoped UiTM Mukah Campus would be given full attention by the Samarahan and Shah Alam campuses.
Earlier, he visited the Tebaloi Processing Centre as well as the Tellian Tengah Sustainable Rural Cooperative and Ulu Mukah Berhad (KODELT).
Also present were Rector of UiTM Sarawak Branch Datuk Dr Jamil Hamali, Deputy Rector of UiTM Sarawak Branch Professor Dr Saimi Bujang and Assistant Rector UiTM Mukah Campus Professor Dr. Abdul Razak Abdul Kadir.
