KUCHING: Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Sarawak branch aspires to establish itself as a globally renowned university.

Rector of UiTM Sarawak Prof Datuk Dr Jamil Hamali said that excellence in education and research is the primary focus of the university, while stressing the university’s commitment to being at the forefront of these fields.

He said that the university strives to produce graduates who possess not only knowledge but also soft skills and can contribute positively to both industries and communities.

“This means the university aims to be recognized internationally for its academic programs, research contributions, and collaborations.

“Many universities worldwide, including UiTM, place a higher emphasis on sustainability, whether in terms of environmental sustainability or ensuring institutions remain relevant and adaptable to global changes,” he said.

Dr Jamil said this in his welcoming address at the Homecoming Dinner in conjunction with the 50th anniversary celebration of UiTM Sarawak held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching last night (Oct 15), officiated by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He added that from 2020 until now, UiTM Sarawak has signed a total of 46 memorandums of understanding (MoUs) and memorandums of agreement (MoAs) with industry partners as well as universities and colleges within and outside the country.

“Just this year alone, a total of 18 MoUs, MoAs, and LoIs (Letter of Intent) were signed with 11 universities and colleges in Indonesia, two in the United States, and one each in Italy, Austria, Singapore, and China,” he said.

Dr Jamil said that UiTM Sarawak Branch has successfully strengthened its position as one of the leading universities in Sarawak and is a top choice for students from all over Malaysia.

He added that the university currently has 8,932 students, comprising 5,617 diploma students, 2,882 undergraduate students, and 175 postgraduate students.

Over its 50 years of existence, he added that the university has achieved remarkable success in various fields and has produced many successful graduates, with a registered alumni count of 37,761 individuals.

Also present were State Secretary Datuk Amar Abu Bakar Marzuki, Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Snowdan Lawan, UiTM Pro Canselor Datuk Abdul Wahab Aziz and former UiTM vice chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Roziah Janor.
