SIBU: Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) student, Deirdre Serena Sendi Michael Remy captured the ‘Kumang’ title during the M.O Sarawak 12th Gala Night on Saturday.
The 25-year-old talented lass beat eight other finalists to bring home various prizes including RM3,000 cash, a trophy, a bouquet and a Borneo Medispa voucher worth RM1,000.
Deirdre, when met by reporters after her crowning, said that she would use the prize money to pay for her master’s degree course during her final year of study.
“I am currently on semester break and take the opportunity to join the contest. The final year will be from October this year to February of 2023,” she said.
The second child in a family of three sibling, who is currently doing a Master in Tourism Management at UiTM Puncak Alam, said that she did not expect to win the competition.
“I didn’t expect to win anything because I only decided to participate in this event to keep myself busy during my semester break.
“I’m incredibly grateful for the chance M.O. Sarawak gave me. I can use this platform to serve as a role model or example for young people and to demonstrate the excellence of indu kumang,” she said.
The second place in the Kumang category went to Mesha Carlynie Jesse who was given the title of “lulong” while Clarissa Rinya Setian came third and was given the title of “Selinggar Matahari”.
Meanwhile, for the Keling category, Edward Anum Landa emerged champion. Second and third respectively were Rochester Lennox and Patrick Yong.
The second place winners for the female and male categories received RM1500, a trophy and a bouquet each while the third place winners for both categories received RM1000, a trophy, and also a bouquet each.
Among those present were the Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Office (Corporate Affairs, Information and Sarawak Public Communications Unit) Datuk Abdullah Saidol; political secretary to the Premier of Sarawak Datuk Seri Dori Sophia Brodie and others.
