KUALA NERUS: The Kelulutpreneur programme by Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT)’s Bee and Stingless Bee Researcher Group (SIG) has been extended to primary school pupils to foster early interest in stingless bee entrepreneurship.
The programme yesterday involving 24 pupils from the Special Education Integrated Programme (PPKI) of Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Padang Kemunting here, is aimed to providing them with the opportunity to explore new knowledge in a more relaxed and interactive environment.
SIG head, Associate Prof Dr Shamsul Bahri Abd Razak said through the programme, the pupils have the opportunity to experience planting air mata pengantin (Mexican creeper) and harvesting honey from stingless bee’s nest.
“Although it is challenging because some of the PPKI pupils are unable to communicate perfectly, they gain the access to knowledge just like any other mainstream pupils,” he told Bernama here.
In the meantime, he said the university is also always looking for platforms and opportunities to transfer knowledge from the university to the people.
He added that prior to this, the Kelulutpreneur programme only involved UMT’s graduates, however, SIG members who are from different specialities decided to take an earlier approach by reaching out to primary school pupils so that the entrepreneurial interest could be cultivated from young.
Besides, the programme is also aimed to create a sense of appreciation among pupils for the environment.
Exposure to the world of stingless bee which is the best pollinating agents in the world would bring the students closer to nature, he explained. – Bernama
