JULAU: UMW Corporation Sdn Bhd (UMW), with the cooperation of the Malaysian Medical Aid Association or Mercy Malaysia, set up a mobile clinic at Rumah (Rh) Anthony Bau, Nanga Sugai, Rantau Tapang, Mujok near here for three days since last August 17 for the benefit of the interior residents.

The programme, which ended on Sunday (August 19) also benefited the Iban community at Rh Anthony Bau, Rh Mengiring, Rh Gerasi Ak Kapi, Rh Entili, Rh Anthony Gelayan and students at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Nanga Ju. Head of the mission, Martin Jandom, said the programme was carried out as part of UMW’s corporate social responsibility in Sarawak this year.

“The area is in the interiors, which make difficult for the residents to go for health checks. So, we bring the facility to them,” he said, adding that the nearest clinic for the residents was the Maong Helah Clinic, which is about an hour journey by boat. He said the mission involved 41 members, including 18 medical volunteers, comprising doctors, dentists and pharmacists, and also media practitioners.

“Eighty five people from the nearby long houses came to seek treatment provided by our team,” he told reporters.

Meanwhile, UMW Corporation Sdn Bhd general manager (Corporate Communication) Badrul Rahman said the UMW CSR with Mercy Malaysia programme had been carried out since 2009 and had benefitted more than 25,000 residents in the interior areas in Sabah and Sarawak.

“UMW provides the allocation, while Mercy Malaysia decides on the location,” he said.
