KUCHING: An unclaimed package containing powder drugs at a transportation hub was seized by Customs Narcotic officials last Friday (Feb 5).
Customs Sarawak director Herman Shah Abdullah, who confirmed the case, said the narcotic unit observed and monitored the premises at Jalan Datuk Tawi Sli before seizing the package.
The unit confiscated the package at about 12.55pm and found that it was sent from Miri to an individual in Kuching.
“A detailed inspection of the package led to the discovery of a number of small ‘Juice Master’ packets.
“The packets were found to contain powder drugs believed to be methamphetamine with an estimated weight of approximately 1.468kg and valued around RM73,400,” he said.
Herman believed that the sender delivered the package via inter-city cargo services to avoid being detected by authorities and because of the cheap cost and fast service.
He stressed that efforts to track down the package’s sender and receiver were in full swing.
The case is being investigated under Section 39B (1) (a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for trafficking dangerous drugs; if convicted, the offender can be sentenced to death.
“The public are urged to cooperate by channelling information related to any smuggling activities by contacting the nearest Customs office,” he said.
