The prevalence of joint pain has increased over the years, as reported by various statistics. In a discussion with Dr Cody Hanish, a chiropractor popular on TikTok and Instagram, he talks about the causes, treatments, and ways to prevent joint pain.

The Growing Challenge of Joint Pain

Worldwide, 1.71 billion people suffer from musculoskeletal conditions. Joint pain is prevalent due to several interconnected factors. TikTok’s famous chiropractor, Dr Cody Hanish, has highlighted that sedentary lifestyles and obesity are significant contributors.

According to a report by the World Health Organization (WHO), in 2022, 35 per cent of males and 43 per cent of females in Malaysia, aged 18 and above, were found to be physically inactive. Additionally, the National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS) 2023 revealed that 54.4 per cent of Malaysian adults are overweight or obese, a notable increase from 44.5 per cent in 2011. This persistent rise in overweight and obesity exacerbates joint pain issues.

Another key factor is repetitive strain from work or daily activities, particularly among working individuals. The Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) projects that the percentage of citizens aged 65 and above will rise from 8.1 per cent in 2024 to 14.5 per cent by 2040. As the population ages, natural wear and tear on joints leads to osteoarthritis.

With these statistics in mind, Dr Cody has noticed a growing awareness of chiropractic benefits in the comment sections of his social media platforms, including Instagram and TikTok.

“With lower back pain being the leading cause of disability in 160 countries, this global trend likely contributes to the increasing number of people seeking chiropractic treatment.”

When asked about specific demographics prone to joint pain, he noted that different groups face various risk factors.

“The elderly often experience joint pain due to natural wear and tear, with conditions like osteoarthritis becoming more common with age.

“Athletes may suffer from joint pain due to sports-related injuries or overuse, while individuals who are obese face additional stress on their joints, which can exacerbate pain.”

He also mentioned that workers performing repetitive tasks are at risk of overuse injuries that contribute to joint discomfort.

Causes, treatments

Based in Sydney, Australia, Dr Cody revealed that joint pains manifest in various forms, each presenting unique challenges. Among the common types of joint pain are:

Lower back pain: This widespread issue often arises from poor posture, improper lifting techniques, or spinal problems. It can significantly affect daily activities and overall quality of life.
Neck and shoulder pain: These are frequently caused by prolonged sitting, poor posture, or repetitive strain from activities such as typing or using a smartphone.

To treat them, treatments vary depending on the underlying cause and severity. Many people typically reach for over-the-counter pain relievers and anti-inflammatory drugs to manage their symptoms.

However, while these medications provide temporary relief and are often the first line of defence against joint pain, addressing the root cause of the pain usually requires other treatments.

Chiropractic care is a popular option, involving adjustments and manipulations to enhance joint function and alleviate pain.

“Physical therapy is another effective approach, focusing on exercises designed to strengthen the muscles around the joints and improve flexibility. Massage therapy can also play a crucial role in treatment, using techniques to reduce muscle tension and improve circulation,” Dr Cody said.

In severe cases, Dr Cody revealed that when conservative treatments are insufficient, surgical options such as joint replacement or repair surgeries may be necessary.

In his practice, Dr Cody also uses tools for targeted relief, such as the Hydragun Massage Gun, which provides targeted muscle relaxation and aids in faster recovery.

“This can be particularly useful for managing pain and aiding in the recovery process from muscle strain or overuse. The Hydragun is also helpful in preventing injuries.

“By combining these treatments, one can achieve comprehensive relief and improved joint function, offering a holistic approach to managing joint pain.”

Preventive measures, lifestyle changes

For individuals with joint pain, adopting certain lifestyle changes can make a significant difference.

“One of the most impactful changes is maintaining a healthy weight, which helps reduce pressure on joints and alleviates discomfort.”

Dr Cody also emphasises the importance of regular exercise, recommending low-impact activities like swimming, walking, or cycling. These activities, he explains, keep the joints flexible and strong without adding undue stress.

For those who are overweight, Dr Cody adds that weight management is crucial, as losing weight can relieve some of the pressure on the joints, potentially reducing pain and preventing further joint issues.

“Proper posture is another key factor in managing joint pain. Avoiding slouching and using ergonomic movements during daily activities can prevent additional strain.”

He also advises against repetitive strain, emphasising the importance of taking breaks, varying tasks throughout the day, and using proper techniques when lifting or engaging in physical activities.

“Wearing supportive footwear can help minimise stress on your joints, while maintaining good posture — both when sitting and standing — supports joint alignment and function.”

Lastly, ensuring adequate rest is crucial.

“Giving your joints time to recover helps prevent overuse and further injury. By integrating these lifestyle practices, individuals can better manage their joint pain and enhance their overall quality of life.”
