Unemployed man gets four months jail for theft

KUCHING: The Magistrate’s Court here sentenced a jobless man to four months in prison for stealing a smartphone and RM25 cash from a woman.

Johan Bujang, 36, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan to a charge framed under Section 380 of the Penal Code.

The charge carries a prison term of up to 10 years and fine.

Johan committed the offence at a house in Kampung Bako around 5.30am on Sept 29.

Based on the facts of the case, at the time of the incident, the 32-year-old woman had just woken up from sleep and found that her Oppo smartphone and cash in her purse amounting to RM25 placed on the table, were missing.

She searched all over the place but failed to find it and suspected that it had been stolen.

The woman then reported the incident to the police for further action and investigation. At around 11.30pm on the same day, Johan was arrested by the police in a house in Kampung Tambirat Tengah.

Investigation found that Johan entered the woman’s house through the main entrance and stole RM25 and the smartphone.

The smartphone seized by the police, was confirmed by the woman as belonging to her.
