KUCHING: Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian recently presented funds from the Unit for Other Religions (UNIFOR) to two religious bodies.

According to the Minister for Public Health, Housing, and Local Government, a total of RM1 million has been allocated to Qin San Yan Chinese Temple at Kampung Muara Tebas.

“The temple has co-existed with the local Malay community for the last 200 years. The original contract, before Covid-19, was worth RM5 million; however, it is now expected to be completed at RM9 million.

“To date, UNIFOR has contributed RM3 million. The temple, under the Hokkien Association, has raised more than RM3 million. Another RM3 million is needed.

“Please donate generously to support this significant landmark at the estuary of Sungai Sarawak, where the capital city of Sarawak, Kuching, is situated further up the river, especially in time for the ‘Mazu’ (Goddess of the Sea) birthday celebration,” he said in his Facebook post yesterday (May 22).

Dr Sim also presented RM100,000 from UNIFOR to St Mary’s Chapel, Sungai Apong.

“This is a very unique chapel. For the local Dayak Christian community, it’s just a 5-minute walk away.

“To date, UNIFOR has allocated RM600,000 to the chapel, and the Sarawak government has provided the land for the chapel for free.

“The estimated cost of the chapel is RM1.27 million, and so far, more than RM900,000 has been paid. We’re almost there, so let’s complete this together,” he added.
