Unimas achieves milestone as finalist in three categories for THE Awards Asia 2024

KOTA SAMARAHAN: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) has become the only Malaysian university shortlisted in three categories for the prestigious Times Higher Education (THE) Awards Asia 2024.

The Head of State Sarawak, Tun Dr. Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar presented the Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Civil Engineering to Azrin Ahmad at the 28th UNIMAS Convocation Ceremony in Kota Samarahan today.

This milestone highlights the university’s global standing and dedication to sustainable development, says Professor Dr Ahmad Hata Rasit.

The Unimas vice-chancellor shared that this recognition reflects the university’s community-focused mission, particularly within Sarawak, and underscores Unimas’ active role in advancing the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“Unimas’ success is evident, with its ranking improving to 301st globally in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2024, up from the previous 401st position,” he said during the 28th Unimas Convocation Ceremony at Detar Putra Unimas on Monday (Nov 4).

Prof Ahmad Hata also highlighted that Unimas ranked among the Top 100 globally in four SDG categories, with “Partnership for the Goals” (SDG 17) earning a remarkable 18th place. The university痴 achievements include SDG 17 “Partnership for the Goals” (18th globally), SDG 2 “Zero Hunger” (57th globally), SDG 14 “Life Below Water” (61st globally) and SDG 15 “Life on Land” (76th globally).

“These accomplishments affirm Unimas’ capability to achieve international recognition across teaching, research, and partnerships on both a national and global scale,” he added.

The convocation ceremony also celebrated the achievements of 3,938 graduates, comprising 3,321 undergraduates and 617 postgraduates.

The first day of the event, officiated by Head of State and newly appointed Unimas chancellor, Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, saw 617 graduates receive their degrees, including 124 Master’s and Doctoral recipients, 465 Bachelor’s degree recipients and 28 Postgraduate Diploma awardees.

This year’s convocation also honoured Prof Ts Datuk Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi with the title of Professor Emeritus, recognising his significant contributions to academia.
