KUCHING: The QS Asia University Rankings 2025, released in early November, have placed Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) at rank 226, marking a notable improvement from last year’s position of 261.

Unimas stands at 12th place, among 19 Malaysian public universities included in the rankings. Unimas ranked at 271st in 2023 and 261st in 2024.

The QS Asia University Rankings is an annual ranking that evaluates the top universities in Asia based on a range of indicators. It is part of the QS World University Rankings but specifically focuses on institutions in the Asian region.

Unimas has seen an increase in its research productivity, with a notable improvement in the citations per paper indicator.

This suggests a higher impact of its research, as more of its publications are being cited in academic literature.

Unimas also has expanded its international research network, reflecting stronger global partnerships and collaborative efforts in research with institutions abroad.

This is an area where Unimas has worked to build stronger connections, further enhancing its visibility and reputation on the global academic stage.

There has been an improvement in academic reputation, as reflected in the increased recognition of the university’s programmes and faculty in regional and international academic surveys.

This is often a sign of greater institutional credibility and a growing recognition of its teaching and research quality.

Unimas has made strides in enhancing its employer reputation, signaling that its graduates are gaining recognition from employers in the region.

This could reflect improvements in curriculum, employability-focused initiatives, and stronger links with industry partners.

The university has also improved its faculty/student ratio, which suggests a more favourable learning environment, potentially offering students more personalised attention and enhancing the quality of teaching and learning experiences.

In the QS Asia University Rankings 2025, Unimas is recognised for its growing presence in the region. Unimas is steadily improving in areas such as academic reputation, research output, and international collaboration.

The university is known for its strong focus on research, particularly in environmental and biodiversity studies, as well as its commitment to enhancing global engagement through increasing the number of international students and faculty.
