SIMUNJAN: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) has formalised a strategic partnership by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with RAF Technologies Sdn Bhd, aiming to advance the realm of clean water treatment.

The collaboration has garnered support from the Sarawak Rural Water Supply Department, with high expectations that this innovative water project will not only benefit Sarawak but also serve as a model for addressing similar challenges in Southeast Asia.

Unimas vice-chancellor Datuk Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi expressed confidence that the pioneering project would offer solutions to water treatment issues, particularly in Sarawak’s peatland areas, and could potentially be extended to other regions facing analogous challenges.

“This collaboration is more than just a partnership; it signifies a commitment to the shared vision of ensuring clean water for all,” he stated in a speech delivered by deputy vice-chancellor for research and innovation, Ir Dr Siti Noor Linda Taib, during the inauguration ceremony at the Simunjan Water Treatment Plant on Thursday (Nov 30).

He mentioned the project’s recognition by the Ministry of Higher Education, listing it in the Public-Private Research Network (PPRN) research grant, ensuring ongoing research to enhance the efficiency of treated water production.

Additionally, Mohamad Kadim stressed Unimas’ commitment to water solutions research through the Faculty of Engineering, collaborating with Sarawak Hydro Sdn Bhd on membrane bioreactor projects.

“Unimas has undertaken several design and build projects for the Sarawak Alternative Water Supply (SAWAS) project in several villages in Lundu.

“It not only addresses water distribution challenges but significantly improves the quality of life for the local community.”

Furthermore, he announced plans to expand the ‘Alpha Water’ water treatment system, supported by the Ministry of Education Malaysia, to schools in rural Sarawak.

The MoU signing involved RAF Technologies managing director Ir Dr Ahmad Fuad Shahrudin, and was witnessed by Simunjan assemblyman Awla Idris.
