KUCHING: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) spearheaded by its Faculty of Applied and Creative Arts hosted the Fifth International Conf e renc e on Appl i ed and Creative Arts (ICACA) 2017 at Riverside Majestic Hotel here on Wednesday. T h eme d , ‘ Strengthening Communities through Arts and Cultural Practices’, with PETRONAS as the main sponsor, the conference was part of the university activities in conjunction with UNIMAS 25th Silver Jubilee celebration.
Earlier on, Deputy Chief Minister, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan in his text speech read by Assistant Minister of Industries and Investment, Malcolm Mussen stated that the conference would provide a platform for exchanging ideas, innovation, information and building relationship in all aspects of arts and design and creative industries. “The state government will give full support in the realisation of these arts and design and creative industries.
“I truly hope that the educators, researchers, designers, artists, film makers, digital content artists, policy makers, arts enthusiasts, fellow students and community leaders will benefit from this intellectual event,” pointed out Tengah, who is also Second Minister of Urban Development and Natural Resources as well as Minister of Industrial and Entrepreneur Development. During the function, the delegates also witnessed the exchange of two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs).
The first was between UNIMAS and Indonesian Ar ts Institute (IAI) Padangpanjang, which is one of the centres of Malay Cultural Development in the Indonesia Archipelago that concerns itself with the development and conservation of traditional art, and excels in performing arts for research or performance.
The MoU was signed between UNIMAS Vice Chancellor, Datuk Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi and IAI Padangpanjang Rector, Prof Dr Novesar Jamarun. Meanwhile, the second MoU, signed between UNIMAS Vice Chancellor, Datuk Dr. Mohamad Kadim Suaidi and Saradise Gallary Sdn Bhd Chief Executive Officer, Dato’ Chris Chung Soon Nam, aiming to be a platform to showcase ‘Sarawakiana’ creative works by renowned local artists and designers, and young emerging talents of Sarawak.
