KUCHING: Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar has urged Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) to accelerate its progress by offering programmes that are aligned with the needs of future industries.

He stressed the university must stay relevant by equipping students with the skills required to thrive in emerging sectors.

“Sarawak is moving towards green energy, and UNIMAS must be capable of producing graduates in line with this direction.

“At the same time, it should help the government foster a creative and innovative society, one that is capable of generating high income while upholding essential human values,” he said during an interview with the UNIMAS Publisher team at his official residence, Kesuma Resort yesterday (Sept 30).

The interview, which was part of preparations for a book marking his appointment as Chancellor of UNIMAS, saw the Governor discussing the fundamental role of higher education institutions.

He noted that universities play a crucial role in addressing national needs in areas such as the economy, social cohesion, and politics, while also responding to evolving industry demands.

He expressed his hope for a prosperous future for Malaysia’s youth, adding, “InshaAllah, may our efforts in advancing the education of our children be blessed by Allah Subhanawata’ala.”

Following the interview, Wan Junaidi participated in a photoshoot, donning the Chancellor’s robe.
