KUCHING: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) is currently in the second phase of producing medical graduates funded by the state government through Yayasan Sarawak.
Its vice chancellor, Prof Dr Ahmad Hata Rasit said the university started the Unimas Medical Special Scholarship programme in 2017.
“We started this in 2017, it was for five years. We are now in the second phase, which will end in another five years,” he said, adding that it provides for 40 Sarawakian students each time.
He said this to reporters during the 1st series of Jom Masuk U 2024 Zone Sarawak ceremony at Pullman Hotel here on Sunday.
He said the programme is an effort by the state and Unimas to provide for doctors and expertise needed by Sarawak by 2030.
“We had 38 graduates last year. So, this year there will be another 40. Every year, we ensure 40 individuals. If it’s not enough, we will take more in the following years,” he said.
He said with the operation of Unimas Teaching Hospital later, the university will create programmes for more expertise to ensure healthcare services to Sarawak are the best.
Earlier in his speech, he recorded its appreciation to the Ministry of Higher Education for entrusting the university to organise the 1st series of Jom Masuk U 2024 Zone Sarawak.
“Unimas is committed to assisting and encouraging school leavers to pursue higher education in line with its aspiration as a university that empowers the community towards global sustainability, including in the aspect of education.
“Unimas continues to strengthen teaching and learning, research, and collaboration in continuous expertise development, not only limited to producing excellent graduates but also skilled human resources and experts to ensure the continuity of state and national planning, industry needs, and community requirement,” he said.
