KUCHING: The state government welcomes and support the collaboration initiative of both Unimas and Senari Synergy in the effort to resolve the long-standing issues involving clean water.

This was mentioned by the Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Senari Synergy and Unimas on Wednesday.

In order to step up cooperative and strategic tie-ups to resolve quality and inconsistent water supply in rural stressed areas, the MoU would enable both parties to explore areas involving developing and rejuvenating the existing water supply infrastructure in remote areas due to low water pressure, ageing pipes and uneven distribution.

Senari Synergy group managing director Jefri Ahmad Tambi said the project would entail the development of a standalone system that would help complement the existing Sarawak State Water Grid Programme.

“This collaboration with Unimas will allow us to assist the state in providing not only clean treated water which is very much needed in the rural areas but more importantly ensuring cost effective and timely delivery of the project through the provision of a standalone system,” he said.

Jefri further added that the corporation would provide the necessary technical expertise and relevant project management skills in facilitating the timely rollout of this project.

Meanwhile, Unimas Deputy Vice Chancellor Professor Datuk Mohd Fadzil Abdul Rahman said the MoU could signify its undertaken research in water desalination and continue to provide research and innovation in the area of nanotechnology.

“It has potential to generate high return on capital due to the utilisation of local technology and high water production rate.

“Unimas’ water desalination is cost saving as it is low energy, reduces greenhouse gas and is environmentally friendly.

“Thus, this helps Unimas to expand this technology further into a bigger area and a big step towards our initiative,” he said.
