KAPIT: Bukit Goram Assemblyman Jefferson Jamit Unyat advised the students here to take up science and math subjects seriously to aim for higher studies in healthcare fields like nursing, medicine and medical studies. “I would like to see many of our youths become professionals in healthcare industries like nursing, technicians, pharmacists and medical officers.
These are respected careers,” said Jamit while officiating at a Unimas course introduction and motivation programme at SMK Kapit 2 on Tuesday.
“Hereby, I call upon parents to encourage and influence their children to be interested in science and math subjects. The importance of science and math subjects should be emphasised because they offer bright future prospects.
“For example, science stream students have a very wide scope of choice like medicine, pharmacy, nursing, engineering, surveying, accountancy and so forth. All these require science and math subjects to qualify for entry. “Today the world belongs to my generation.
Tomorrow the world will belong to the youths of today. We need expertise knowledge and skill among the youths who will contribute to the future development of Kapit,” he said.
Jamit lauded Unimas for holding the outreach programme at SMK Kapit 2, under its Jerayawara Unimas programme to coincide with the varsity’s Silver Jubilee anniversary celebration.
He also praised Unimas for disseminating vital information on its Faculty of Health Science and Medical Studies. The programme was attended by Form 4, Form 5 and Form 6 students. Meanwhile, the programme was part of Unimas Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) for local communities which aimed at promoting health awareness as well as introducing existing medical courses available at its Medical Faculty.
Meanwhile Unimas Vice Chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi in his opening remarks said a similar programme was also held in Kanowit before coming to Kapit. The Unimas team would continue the programme at SMK Selirik on Wednesday (yesterday) before returning to Kuching.
He added that pursuing a nursing degree takes four years while it is five years for a medical gegree. The minimum entry requirement for nursing degree is 3.0 CGPA while for a medical degree it is 4.0 flat.
Prof Kadim also informed that Unimas currently has some 17,000 undergraduates pursuing 41 bachelor degree courses, 40 master degree courses and 29 doctorate degree courses. “Unimas has one of the best medical faculties among public institutions of higher learning.
It is on par with UM (University Malaya), USM (University Sains Malaysia) and UKM (University Kebangsaan Malaysia),” he stressed. Also spoke at the function was the Principal of SMK Kapit 2, Robin Sabai. Among those present were Professor Dr Ahmad Hata Rasit, Deputy Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Kopli Bujang and Associate Professor Dr Ramlah Zainudin.
