KUCHING: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has urged Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) to take the lead in researching methods to enhance sago growth and utilise its by-products as an energy source.

He shared that he had recently met with sago experts who were looking into the potential production of methane from sago waste.

“There might be a technology to accelerate sago growth and convert sago waste into energy.

“Sago is a self-sustaining wild plant that can grow independently without the need for plantations. I hope that UNIMAS will be at the frontline of this research,” said Abang Johari.

He made these remarks while officiating at the inaugural Natural Science and Technology Conference (NaSTeC) 2023 at Waterfront Hotel here yesterday (October 5).

On a related note, the Premier emphasised the importance of aligning the state’s economic development with environmental sustainability through the strategic use of the state’s rich biodiversity resources.

“As far as the state government is concerned, we are going towards that. Firstly, our economy must be green economy. Secondly, we must invest in research and talent development to cultivate a skilled workforce capable of driving this innovation.
