KUCHING: Airlines Workers’ Union Sarawak (AWUS) has requested the Federal and State governments to review MASwings decision to stop services on two routes in Sarawak.
Its president Jagjiwah Singh said the decision of MASwings to stop the Kuching-Sibu and Kuching-Bintulu routes should be reviewed as they were very important to the people.
“Reducing the routes will impact job opportunities in Sarawak, and with a small labour market, the staff involved may be placed elsewhere … they will have to bear the high cost of living when working away from their families.
“AWUS feels the welfare of workers should be given weightage. The rising cost of living that highlights the importance of creating jobs in the State should be taken into account,” he said in a statement here.
According to him, for the record, only MASwings provided services to ferry patients from Sibu and Bintulu who were referred to specialist medical centres in Kuching.
In addition to MASwings, there are low-cost commercial flights serving the routes, but they do not provide services that require “stretcher kits”, namely, a special bed for the patient’s use in the plane, he said.- Bernama
