KUCHING: The Sarawak Bumiputera Teachers Union (KGBS) welcomes the measures taken by the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) to curb gangsterism including at the school level, as announced by Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador recently.
Earlier, Abdul Hamid had said that his mission was to correct the minds of the people in order to curb gangsterism elements in primary and secondary schools.
He also said that any person who claimed to be a gangster would be arrested and taken action against under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma).
“KGBS considers these good measures as early prevention before the issue of gangsterism becomes widespread in schools,” said KGBS president Ahmad Malie when contacted last Saturday.
He said that with the efforts carried out by PDRM, it also proved that the issue of gangsterism existed in schools.
Nevertheless, he considered the issue as rather isolated and not extensive at this point. Therefore, he supports this effort by PDRM.
“KGBS urges PDRM to continue strengthening cooperation with schools through programmes, in order to ensure that the schooling environment is free of gangsterism elements.
“With this, we are confident that a safe environment can be created for all in schools,” said Ahmad.
