KUCHING: Yayasan Perpaduan Sarawak (YPS), in collaboration with MYY Living Arts, is showcasing unique cultural heritage segments as part of a public arts initiative aimed at fostering, developing and improving cultural and educational exchanges.

Audiences can anticipate exciting programmes such as ‘Music In Tradition,’ a segment that honours practitioners employed in areas of their cultural heritage.

The first “Music in Tradition” segment was organised on Saturday and was featured through live broadcast via Facebook from Coco Cabana, Miri.

It showcased Baram Kenyah sape elder sum practitioners, Salomon Gau and Lian Balan who entertained with a few rare sape melodies as well as the long unheard melodies of the two-stringed sape  which was once used for ceremonies and rituals.

Salomon and Lian both provided insights into the history of the two-stringed sape and shared their points of view on the evolution of the instrument.

Other upcoming segments such as ‘Learning from Our Elders’ and ‘Culinary Demo & Dialogue’  in the coming months will feature practitioners from various communities from all over Sarawak.

They will be produced for limited in-person activity in adherence to public health standard operating procedures (SOPs) and made available live online on MYY Living Arts website and social media channels.

In line with the collaboration for the special segments, YPS aims to engage Sarawak youth in activities that will increase their understanding and appreciation of each other’s cultural heritage
