KUCHING: Sarawak Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) must work closely with other Pakatan Harapan (PH) parties in order to win the 2021 state polls.
Bersatu chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said PH managed to change the federal government led by Barisan Nasional, and that change could happen in Sarawak too, provided PH at state level must be united.
“The Sarawak government is still under the old government, of course they will continue to defend their place. But if we (PH) are united, we can defeat the current ruling party,” Dr Mahathir said at the Berambeh Bersatu Sarawak programme here yesterday.
He stressed that the priority now was for the coalition to stand united or else they would fail.
“When Democratic Action Party (DAP) fights in one area, the other parties — Bersatu, Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) and Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) — need to back them up.
“If they lose, that means we (PH) all lose too,” Dr Mahathir, who is also the Prime Minister, said.
He said people had different opinions, but the differences should not be focused on.
“We must set our focus straight, on the things that can further strengthen us.
“Remember, when we are corrupted, we will forget what we are fighting for. When we forget, we will be defeated and lose in the end,” he said.
Meanwhile, Datuk Seri Azman Samaon, the organising chairman of the event and Sarawak Bersatu interim chairman, said as of yesterday, there were 50,000 members registered with Bersatu.
“This is not a gimmick, but a fact, and our target is to get 150,000 members by year end.”
