When asked about the song’s inspiration, legendary local composer and singer, Andrewson Ngalai, smiled as though reliving the moment the lyrics first came to him.
Born Ngalai Asom in Selangau, he described “Biar Bekikis Bulu Betis” as a reflection of Iban life — vibrant, resilient and full of colour.
At 63 and now serving as a penghulu (community leader), the singer reflected on how humour represented resilience in his community — to face challenges with a smile.
“Words like ‘biar bekikis bulu betis’ are more than just playful phrases; they captured the essence of everyday life in the Iban community, passed down from generation to generation.
“The humour woven into the lyrics isn’t simply light-hearted; it’s central to the song’s soul, inviting listeners to connect through laughter and rhythm.
“To me, humour is a unifying language; it bridges gaps and creates bonds between the listener and performer, whether they know the language or simply feel the beat,” he explained.
Nevertheless, beneath the catchy lyrics, the song carries a deeper message: the importance of hard work and perseverance.
“Life is about struggle — whether in love, career, or everyday life. Nothing comes easy,” he pointed out.
With its down-to-earth tone, “Biar Bekikis Bulu Betis” spoke universal truths, resonating with audiences across Malaysia.

Despite being over 20 years old, the song’s popularity continues to grow — not just in Sarawak but across the nation.
In recent years, ‘Biar Bekikis Bulu Betis’ has found its way into national celebrations.
Former Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, joined the crowd in singing it during a visit to Rumah Raymond Plen in Sebauh, Bintulu.
It was also played during the National Day celebration in Putrajaya and became a crowd favourite at the 2024 Malaysian Games (SUKMA) in Sarawak, where athletes and fans alike whistled, hummed and sang along.
This iconic song has become such a staple that no event in this Land of the Hornbills feels complete without it. Frequently accompanied by poco-poco dancing, it is now widely regarded as Sarawak’s unofficial second anthem.
Hence, in recognition of “Biar Bekikis Bulu Betis” for uplifting Sarawak’s cultural identity and fostering unity across Malaysia, Penghulu Ngalai was awarded the prestigious Tokoh Perpaduan Seni Budaya at the Anugerah Seni Budaya Sarawak 2023.
“I believe that this song contributes to unity through its memorable melody and spirited lyrics.
“This song brings a sense of harmony that transcends cultural and language boundaries, making it a song that spans generations and ethnicities. To me, it is a living example of how ethnic music serves as a bridge between cultures.
“Music is a universal language, and through ethnic songs like this, we learn to appreciate and experience the beauty of each other’s cultures,” he said.
The fact that “Biar Bekikis Bulu Betis” now appears at official functions alongside patriotic songs that bring Malaysians from all walks of life together is another thing Penghulu Ngalai felt proud of.
He also noted that Dr Patricia Ganing from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) is currently conducting research on the song’s unifying elements, further recognising its cultural impact.
