KUCHING: Sunway Education Group chief executive officer Prof Elizabeth Lee has refuted the involvement of higher educational institution students in ‘sugar baby’ services.

Lee, via a post on her Facebook account said the allegation was very disappointing because “it challenges the morale of our community and young people”.

“We strongly condemn acts that attempt to undermine the morale and discipline of our students that can affect their mental health,” Lee stressed.

The hotly debated ‘sugar daddy’ issue was exacerbated when a recent post on Facebook revealed a sharp increase in the involvement of higher education institution students in ‘sugar baby’ services.

The post alleged some of the students were from Sunway University, INTI International University, Taylor University and TAR University College.

This, however, was denied by Lee who described the article as inaccurate and seen as wanting to weaken Sunway’s efforts in producing a better society and a progressive country.

Meanwhile, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) deputy vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Mohd Fadzil Abdul Rahman said the cravings of young people for luxury was one of the reasons they were involved.

“The hardships of living in the city such as the high cost of living should not be used as an excuse for students to be involved in this immoral activity as we are always concerned about their welfare,” Fadzil said.

Vocational Colleges/Technical Secondary Schools Counsellors Council chairman Sangin Juat, meanwhile, said the desire of young people to live a life full of glamour was one of the factors that drove them to become ‘sugar babies’.

“The ‘sugar daddy/sugar baby’ issue among young people is not a new thing because it has existed for decades.

“There is no shortcut to a luxurious life unless we ourselves work hard,” he said.
