SIBU: A 50-year-old man was sentenced to one day’s imprisonment and fined RM1,000, in default, one month’s jail by the Magistrates’ Court here today (Sept 20) for operating a second hand goods business without any valid licence.

When the nature of charge was read and explained to Ngu Chii Kwong from Jalan Oya, he understood and the consequences of admitting his wrongdoing.

In meting out the sentence, magistrate Romario Jonoi accepted his plea of guilty and convicted him of the offence as charged.

The charge preferred to Ngu stated that he was found operating a secondhand goods business at a premises in Alan Alley at about 11.40 am on Sept 9.

The offence is listed under Section 6 of the Second Hand Dealer Act 1946 and punishable under Section 9 of the same Act.

The case was prosecuted by Inspector Kumareswaran Murugan while the accused was unrepresented by legal counsel.

Ngu, who pleaded for leniency, opted to pay the fine.
