WWF-Malaysia is delighted to launch its latest publication, “Protecting People, Sustaining Nature: Finding the Balance for Kuba’an-Puak and the Maligan Highlands”, in celebration of World Rainforest Day, which was yesterday.
In a recent statement, the organisation said that this insightful 98-page book explores the delicate balance between conservation, indigenous wellbeing, and sustainable development in Sarawak.
“This book embodies our dedication and commitment to achieving a harmonious coexistence between nature and human development.
“It represents a beacon of hope for sustainable practices that benefit both indigenous communities and the environment,” said Cynthia Chin, head of the Sarawak Conservation Programme at WWF-Malaysia.
The statement went on to say that, in honour of World Rainforest Day, people are reminded of the crucial need to protect our rainforests.
“They are essential for preserving biodiversity and motivating action to ensure their safety.
“Hence, this book highlights WWF-Malaysia’s efforts in community-based conservation to safeguard these valuable ecosystems and support the livelihoods of indigenous communities,” it noted.
To celebrate this milestone, a limited number of complimentary copies of the book will be available from the end of June through a special giveaway on WWF-Malaysia’s social media platforms.

About the book
In the heart of Sarawak lie two sanctuaries of rich biodiversity and diverse cultures: the Kuba’an-Puak and the Maligan Highlands.
“Protecting People, Sustaining Nature: Finding the Balance for Kuba’an-Puak and the Maligan Highlands” invites readers on a compelling journey into this unique landscape, where conservation, indigenous wellbeing, and sustainable development converge in a delicate balance.
Authored by WWF-Malaysia and made possible through the generous support of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, this 98-page book delves into one of the last remnants of contiguous forests in the state.
These forests are not merely landscapes; they are vital ecosystems that house diverse plants and animals and are crucial for sustaining indigenous communities such as the Penan, Kelabit, and Lun Bawang.
The book serves as a testament to WWF-Malaysia’s commitment to achieving a harmonious relationship between nature and human development.
It explores sustainable practices that benefit both indigenous communities and their surroundings, offering hope for the coexistence of people and nature.
This publication is more than just a book; it’s a call to action to unite for the future of our environment and communities.
It sheds light on the challenges faced by these unique ecosystems while highlighting the collaborative efforts of communities, stakeholders, and partners in ensuring a sustainable future.
The book shares success stories, struggles, and a shared vision of preserving our natural heritage while fostering sustainable development.
Come, let’s join WWF-Malaysia in celebrating this milestone and be a part of the movement to protect and sustain the Kuba’an-Puak and the Maligan Highlands.
