KUCHING: UOB Malaysia and Chemsain Konsultant have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), to foster Sarawak’s vision of becoming a green hub in the region.
The signing ceremony took place on March 1, with Datuk Seri Abang Abdul Karim Tun Datuk Abang Openg, president of the Sarawak Business Federation, as a witness.
Representatives for the two organisations were Beh Wee Khee, managing director and country head of commercial banking for UOB Malaysia, and Dr. John Chan, director of Chemsain.
In a statement today (Mar 4), the initiative was designed to support Sarawak’s sustainability agenda, helping local companies prosper and attracting green investments to the area through the joint capacity-building programmes and workshops aimed at improving sustainability practices among businesses.
Furthermore, the two parties plan to use their combined expertise to develop sustainable frameworks and tools specifically designed for businesses.
“We are pleased to embark on this strategic partnership with Chemsain Konsultant as we collectively support Sarawak’s sustainability goals. This collaboration represents our commitment to drive green investments and foster sustainable practices within the ASEAN region. By combining our expertise and network strength with Chemsain, we aim to empower businesses to embrace sustainability and contribute to the building of a greener and more resilient future,” said Beh.
UOB has been an early advocate of green initiatives, developing sustainable finance frameworks and solutions to assist ASEAN companies in their transition to net zero. The bank achieved carbon neutrality for its operations in 2021, a milestone reflected in its Malaysian headquarters’ platinum green certification.
Meanwhile, Dr. Chan said that Chemsain is proud to have supported Sarawak’s environmental and social sectors for the past four decades.
“We look forward to leveraging our environmental and sustainability expertise to drive impactful change across industries. We are excited to be working with a like-minded partner like UOB to accelerate sustainable adoption throughout the region,” he said.
