Better and improved water systems are beneficial for commercialisation in plantations, as well as to avoid flood issues.

Dayang Noorazah Awang Sohor (GPS – Lingga) pointed out to the august house that the people in Lingga face issues of flash floods.

“An upgrade of the drainage system is necessary to reduce flash floods,” she said during a debate in support of the Supply Bill (2023) and motion to refer the Resolution of the Development Expenditure Budget for 2023 on the fifth day of the 19th State Legislative Assembly (DUN) session on Friday (Nov 25).

As such, she urged DID (Department of Irrigation and Drainage) Sarawak and other agencies to take further action and intensify its drainage repair work so that flash flood issues in Lingga can be reduced.

For instance, areas in Maludam and Triso are often destroyed due to the overflowing rain and flood waters which occur especially during rainy seasons.

Meanwhile, she also proposed to the Sarawak government to commercialise the planting of ketum ayam or ‘mandre de agua leaves’ which could be used as an alternative animal feed.

She explained that the benefit of alternative animal feed is that it does not have negative side effects to the animal but in fact enhance healthy and quality meat.

“At the same time, the supply of this plant is welcomed throughout the country, including Sabah and Sarawak.

“If this plant can be commercialised in Sarawak, then it will certainly elevate the farming and plantation economy,” she added.
