NATIVE courtrooms in two districts namely Lingga and Daro as well as sub-district Medamit, will be upgraded this year.
Minister in the Premier’s Department (Native Laws and Customs) Datuk John Sikie Tayai in his winding-up speech yesterday (May 24), pointed out that it is being implemented by the State Development Office.
“In respect of the native courtroom upgrading under the purview of Native Courts Sarawak, the government has upgraded a total of 21 courtrooms in various districts and sub-districts since 2015, at a total cost of RM3.2 million.
“For this year, it is proposed to implement the upgrading of three native courtrooms at Lingga District Office, Daro District Office and Medamit Sub-District Office,” he said.
On another point in regard to capacity building, Sikie disclosed that a total of 11 programmes were being planned to be carried out this year.
This programme will be for court presiding officers and officials, including community leaders and headmen throughout Sarawak.
He added that since 2014, the Office of the Chief Registrar had been organising a series of capacity building programmes involving training, workshops, seminars and briefings to native courts presiding officers and officials.
Since then, a total of 6,013 persons had attended these programmes incurring a total cost of RM3.01 million.
