KUCHING: The Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) has announced plans to upgrade the markets at Sadong Jaya and Asajaya following the completion of the Tambirat market in Asajaya.
According to MPKS chairman Datuk Peter Minos, serious planning is underway for the expansion of Pekan Asajaya, with a focus on creating a large and aesthetically pleasing market.
He noted the importance of markets as essential hubs for locals to purchase meat, fish, vegetables, fruits, and other daily necessities.
The planned upgrades aim to enhance the popularity and congeniality of these markets, with a primary focus on cleanliness and neatness.
In a statement on Tuesday (Jan 16), Minos said that if funding is allocated to MPKS for market development, they envision establishing a sizable central market in Kota Samarahan.
This envisioned market would not only cater to local residents but also serve as an attraction for both local and foreign tourists, providing an iconic and exotic experience.
To gain insights into effective market management and operations, MPKS officials plan to visit the renowned Sibu Central Market.
“As Sibu Central Market is known as the biggest and best market around, we are hoping to get good ideas on their market management and operations,” Minos said.
