KAPIT: Local Ibans have been praised for keeping certain positive aspects of their traditions and customs alive.

“I am very happy to see that the Ibans here still uphold their traditions and customary practices,” said Bukit Goram assemblyman, Jefferson Jamit Unyat.

He was addressing people at a wedding reception held at Rumah Ringgit in Nanga Sebilat, Sungai Kapit in the outskirts of this town.

“As Dayaks, we ought to be proud of our rich and valuable ‘adat istiadat’ that make our unique,” said the guest of honour at the wedding of one Lister Jamaica Jilun and Syahrulniza Esah Lembang which was conducted in the traditional way.

On the wedding, Jamit said he was happy to have been invited to attend it as it was an eye-opener for many who lead modern lives in urban centres.

“The environment is completely different from wedding receptions at restaurants attended by invited guests only,” he said.

On the political front, he reminded the people to be united as the backbone of Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS).

“We, that is, Member of Parliament Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi and I, were elected to serve you. We are committed to help you and bring development to Kapit,” he said.

“We have to be united politically for our own good. If we are divided, we will all lose one way or another, which we can’t afford.

“Political unity is conducive to more development for the benefit of everybody.”

He reminded his audience that in two years, Kapit would undergo transformation as many development projects have been implemented such as the town’s multi-storey car park, Kapit waterfront landscape project, Lily Pond landscape beautification project, and redevelopment of Kapit Town Square that are scheduled for completion in 2020.

He disclosed that GPS has been approved by the Registrar of Societies (ROS) and its road show will be here on January 14.
