KUCHING: A Sarawak Urban Forum 1.0 is being held here to discuss ways to empower the creation of sustainable cities.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg explained that the event builds on Sarawak’s success in hosting the 5th Malaysia Urban Forum last year.
“Sarawak Urban Forum 1.0 offers a platform for stakeholders in developing urban areas to come together and exchange ideas on how we can create sustainable cities.
“This conference provides a unique opportunity to share successful practices and innovative approaches that can empower sustainable urban development,” he said.
He said this in his speech read by Minister of Women, Childhood and Community Well-being Development Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah during the opening of the Sarawak Urban Forum 1.0 at Hikmah Exchange Centre on Monday (Oct 21).
He highlighted that the forum aligns with the Sarawak government’s current focus, as outlined in the state’s sustainable development action plan.
“The Sarawak Sustainable Blueprint will serve as a foundation for all sectors and communities in advancing Sarawak’s sustainability.
“Sarawak is committed to environmental sustainability, in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030, and seeks to balance economic growth by implementing responsible development and natural resource management practices.
“The blueprint addresses concerns related to biodiversity conservation, natural resource management, and climate change mitigation and adaptation, while promoting modern infrastructure.”
Abang Johari said the aim is to continue environmental initiatives such as green efforts and to strengthen regulatory frameworks to support environmental conservation.
Fatimah also expressed confidence that Sarawak is on the right track to enhancing and contributing to environmental sustainability in the future.
Additionally, she emphasised that her ministry is advancing various initiatives to ensure Sarawak’s communities are not left behind in the drive toward sustainable urbanisation.
Also present were Deputy Minister of Utility and Telecommunications, Datuk Dr. Abdul Rahman Junaidi, and Kuching North City Commission Mayor, Datuk Hilmy Othman.
