SIBU: Effective January 1, 2020, all supermarkets under the jurisdiction of Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) are only allowed to give out biodegradable bags and recycle bags to their customers.

The council’s chairman Clarence Ting said that supermarkets, however, have to charge their customers 20 cents per bag should they request for it. He also advised members of the public to use eco-friendly bags while shopping.

“The council will send reminders to plastic bag manufacturers in Sibu to supply only biodegradable bags to business outlets,” said Ting during the council’s meeting here yesterday.

On the street garden campaign, he disclosed that the council had begun with Old Oya Road Lane 8 in September. The next few areas are Jalan Permai in November and Jalan Apollo in December.

“The campaign aims to clear road verges and open spaces from any activities such as illegal planting on state land,” he said, adding that it had become an eyesore to the public.

“Therefore, members of the public are reminded to refrain from planting vegetables or fruit trees along the road verges. Otherwise, they will be bulldozed by the council.”

On the improvement to Taman Jubilee Bukit Aup and its lake, Ting said the council had implemented a massive improvement project to upgrade it since July 26, 2019.

The project, costing RM467,773 is expected to be completed on November 25.
