KUCHING: The Sarawak government is currently using new methods to improve the state’s economy in line with the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said these include utilising hydrogen energy as well as carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) as a new source of income.

He said this would reduce dependence on conventional sources including diesel.

“Currently, hydrogen is talked about as an energy source in the face of climate change issues.

“The latest data shows that global warming has caused excess heat to be absorbed by the sea, thus changing its condition.

“This is becoming a global problem because the fish population will decrease,” he was quoted as saying in a news report from the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS).

Abang Johari stressed that the new economic measures taken by the Sarawak government also enabled the issue of climate change to be addressed.

He added that the implementation of PCDS 2030 also led to the development of technology, as well as increasing the salary level in the state.

The Premier said many Sarawakians who worked in large companies in Peninsular Malaysia have now returned to work in the state for companies such as Petros and Sarawak Metro.

“This means, if we have a strategic development plan based on the use of technology, then income will also increase.

“This gives opportunity to the local community to get a high salary,” he said.

Among those present were the Deputy Premiers; Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian; Sarawak State Secretary Datuk Amar Abu Bakar Marzuki; former Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan Hong Nam and other distinguished guests.
