SIBU: The University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) is expecting a significant increase in the enrolment of international students in the coming years.

According to UTS Vice-Chancellor, Professor Datuk Dr Khairuddin Abdul Hamid, the university is actively developing strategies to attract international students and internationalise its faculty.

“This is in line with UTS’s 2024-2030 strategic plan, which aims to establish UTS as a globally recognised institution in technical and professional education.

“We anticipate a rise in international students, particularly from ASEAN nations, specifically Indonesia and Brunei, China, and Indochina, who will choose UTS and Sibu as their preferred higher education destination,” he stated.

He made this statement during his speech at an appreciation dinner for UTS collaboration partners held at a renowned hotel here on Wednesday night (24th April).

Khairuddin also mentioned that the university intends to actively recruit faculty and researchers from abroad in the coming years to enhance the reputation of UTS and Sibu on the global stage.

He expressed his hope for full support and assistance from collaboration partners such as the Immigration Department in achieving this goal.

Meanwhile, regarding the dinner, Khairuddin emphasised its purpose as a gathering to extend heartfelt appreciation to all UTS collaboration partners, including Sibu Municipal Council (SMC), Fire and Rescue Department, PDRM, and media practitioners.

“A few years ago, UTS was relatively unknown, but with your support, it has become a household name and a source of pride for Sibu and Sarawak.

“We are becoming the university of choice in Sarawak, with the total student population skyrocketing from just over 1,000 to more than 3,200 in the last three years.

“We are confident that we will reach a student population of 4,000 by the end of this year.

“We express our gratitude for your continuous support and cooperation with UTS,” he added.

Sibu Resident Datuk Wong Hee Sieng, SMC deputy chairman Mohammed Abdullah Izkandar Roseley, Sibu Fire and Rescue Department Zone 4 chief Andy Alie, and Sibu Police Chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili were also present.
