SIBU: It is crucial for University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) to collaborate with the Asian-China Education and Culture (ACEC) as it is one of the universities offering higher education to the United Examination Certificate (UEC) graduates.

According to Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation, and Talent Development, Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee, there are a lot of UEC graduates from the Chinese Independent Schools in Sarawak.

“This (UTS) is one of the universities (where they can further their studies) … there are only a few universities that accept UEC students,” he said.

He said while witnessing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signing between UTS and ACEC on Monday (Oct 31).

Dr Annuar said to enhance UTS as a university that recognised UEC graduates, it is appropriate for them to work together with China universities as it will continue the pathway for the students from UEC to further their studies in China universities.

“I am sure that now it is not cheap for you to go to China for further studies, but we hope in the future, we can build a gateway for these UEC students if possible. We can do some form of a training programme in universities.

“The students can do their first year or second year in UTS where part of the lectures are conducted online or lecturers from China can come down to UTS to lecture, particularly for this group of UEC graduate students.

“And then later on they can further their studies in China universities. It will help these students a lot in terms of finances as well because if you study the whole course in China it will be more costly.

“So, this collaboration should be enhanced further,” he said.

Dr Annuar said China has grown very fast not only in terms of infrastructure and in terms of buildings, but in terms of technology they have gone very far ahead compared to other countries in the world.

“So, we should learn a lot from them, and learning has no boundaries. People might question why not learn in Japan, the United Kingdom, United States but I am sure there are a lot of Americans in China to learn what China can offer them.

“So, therefore, in terms of the learning process, there should be no limits at all for us to collaborate and I hope in the future UTS will become one of the universities that collaborates very well with China universities and can be a gateway for Malaysia students to further their studies in China,” he said.
