SIBU: An educational collaboration agreement between a university and Chinese-medium school here is expected to bolster the school’s good standing and also attract students from China.
It was inked between University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) and Guong Ming Middle School (GMMS) here Tuesday.
GMMS chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King said the establishment of UTS offers the best opportunity for students in Sarawak to pursue further studies, especially those from Chinese independent schools.
“As a university with progressive, open and pragmatic high-end education concepts, UTS is indeed a blessing to the people of Sibu, and it has also become the people’s first choice of university,” he said at the agreement signing ceremony.
The agreement was sealed by UTS Vice Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Khairuddin Ab. Hamid with Tiong on behalf of GMMS.
The agreement also seeks to promote collaboration in recruiting students from China to UTS.
The Board of GMMS had invited UTS to join them in their recruitment programme in Fujian, China last month.
Tiong said in recent years, UTS which has been embarking on internationalisation programmes had recruited students from China.
He said this will not only profoundly affect academic development in Sibu but will also help cultivate scientific talents.
“Today, it is no longer an unattainable dream for students from China to pursue their further studies in UTS Sibu,” he said.
“The agreement signed between UTS and GMMS today indeed writes a new historical chapter for the development of eastern and western higher education on an equal footing,” he said.
Tiong also expressed his gratitude to the Sarawak government and UTS, for their recognition and acceptance of independent Chinese school education.
Among those present to witness the agreement signing were Deputy Chairman of GMMS Datuk Seri Song Tiing Seng, Director of Centre for International Relations of UTS Assoc. Prof. Dr Wong Sing Sing, Registrar of UTS Jimmy De Rozario, Board Secretary of GMMS James Sie Chung Ann and GMMS’s Vice Principal Tieng Ngik Hung.
