KUCHING: Education initiatives by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg have paid dividends to University of Technology Sarawak (UTS).

Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation, and Talent Development Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee said the introduction of substantial scholarships at UTS in 2021 has yielded unprecedented results.

These scholarships include a 50 per cent discount for all Sarawakian students and an impressive 80 per cent reduction for those classified as being from the B40 group.

Dr Annuar, who is also UTS chairman, remarked that the impact on student enrolment at UTS has been nothing short of extraordinary.

“In just two years, the university has seen a remarkable 360 per cent increase in enrolment, surging from 540 students in 2021 to a staggering 1,943 students in 2023.

“With the current student count nearing 3,200, it is a certainty that UTS will reach its maximum capacity of 4,000 students by 2024,” he said in a Facebook post.

Furthermore, he noted the Premier’s commitment to making tertiary education 100 per cent tuition-free by 2026 is poised to further revolutionise the educational landscape.

If implemented, he said it is anticipated that UTS will witness an influx of over 5,000 new students, further cementing its status as a hub for higher learning.

“The UTS expresses its heartfelt gratitude to the Premier and the Sarawak government for their unwavering support in transforming the educational prospects of Sarawak’s youth.

“Looking ahead, the focus for UTS is set on enhancing its overall rating and academic excellence,” he said.
