SIBU: The 4,000-capacity grand hall of University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) which is expected to be completed by year end will be named after Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.

UTS vice-chancellor, Prof Datuk Dr Khairuddin Abdul Hamid said this during the UTS 6th Convocation Ceremony.

“We are forever grateful and honoured because Tuan Yang Terutama Tun Canselor has given his blessing and approval to name the grand hall as “Dewan Canselor Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud,” he said.

According to Khairuddin the grand hall will become an iconic and majestic landmark not only in UTS but also for Sibu as well.

“Personally, I think this is definitely the best present as we celebrate the new status and name of University of Technology Sarawak (UTS).”

Khairuddin said the new academic block and student sports complex had just been completed and would be ready for use in the near future.
