SARATOK: A vacant double-storey house used as a source of electricity for a longhouse near Sungai Engkabang was destroyed in a fire yesterday (Jan 31).

A spokesman for the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said firemen from the Saratok station were deployed to the scene following an emergency call around 6.20pm.

On arrival, they found the fire had spread fast.

The team had to use water sourced from a pond behind the house as there was no fire hydrant nearby.

The flames were brought under control around 6.30pm. The fire was completely put out at 7.55pm.

It is understood that the house was unoccupied for a while after the owner and his family had moved into a newly built longhouse nearby.

The new longhouse gets its power supply from the house as the former has yet to have its own electricity supply.

No injuries were reported in the incident and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
